Google.

Privacy

Privacy Policy

CoShare is built so that we couldn’t see your data even if we wanted to: no servers, no accounts, no analytics. This page explains exactly what happens to every piece of information the app handles.

Last updated: 19 October 2026 · Applies to the CoShare apps on every platform and to this website

No servers. What you copy goes straight between your devices, on your local network only.
No accounts. No email, no phone number, no Apple ID or Google account.
No tracking. The app never connects to the internet and sends no analytics or crash reports.
Encrypted between your devices. Every message uses a key derived from your group’s password.
History that erases itself. Deleted after a day by default, a week at most.
You’re in control. Pause, quiet hours, clear history and leave a group any time.

Who we are and who can reach your data

CoShare is an independent, open-source project on GitHub. The app sends nothing to us, so we don’t collect, store or process any personal data about you. The only parties that can reach your data are you and the devices you add to your groups yourself.

Data the app handles on your devices

Everything below stays on your devices, in the app’s data folder and settings:

DataWhyWhen it’s deleted
Text you copyTo send it to your group’s devices, and so you can find it in your historyAfter the retention period (one day by default), or immediately when you clear it
Copied images and screenshotsThe same, at original quality, as files inside the app’s folderTogether with their history entry
Activity logSo you can see sync working: connected, sent, received, errors. It never contains what you copiedAfter the same retention period
Groups: name, ID and passwordSo the device rejoins its groups automatically after a restartWhen you leave the group or delete the app
Device name and a random device IDSo your devices recognise each otherWhen you delete the app
Local-network addresses of your devices and their quiet-hour schedulesTo reconnect quickly, and never to contact a device during its quiet hoursUpdated automatically; deleted with the app
SettingsQuiet hours, retention, time format and so onWhen you delete the app
  • CoShare only reads the clipboard while the device is in a group, not paused, and outside quiet hours.
  • On the Mac, items copied from password managers (like 1Password) that are marked as concealed are ignored: never stored, never sent. This is on by default.
  • You choose the retention period in Settings: 1 hour, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days or a week. History keeps at most 500 items, and images up to 40 MB each.

What travels over your local network

1. The device announcement, visible to everyone on the network

To find your devices automatically, each device announces itself over Bonjour (mDNS, service _coshare._tcp) with only this: its name, its platform, a random device ID, the protocol version, and for each group its ID, its name and a short check value (4 bytes) derived from its password, plus its quiet-hour schedule if you turned one on.

So choose device and group names that reveal nothing sensitive, and a strong password: the check value lets someone on the network try passwords offline, so a weak one can be guessed.

2. What you copy: encrypted, for your groups’ devices only

Every copy goes directly over a local TCP connection (port 47331) to the devices in your groups and nowhere else. The whole message — the content, the sender’s name and platform, and when it was copied — is encrypted and authenticated with ChaCha20-Poly1305 using a 256-bit key derived from the group password with PBKDF2-SHA256 (120,000 iterations, salted with the group ID), with a fresh random nonce per message. Without the password nobody can read or forge these messages.

3. Direct-connection messages

So CoShare works when a laptop is on the phone’s hotspot or on a network that blocks discovery, a device sends an encrypted “hello” — sealed with the group key — to the router’s address and to addresses where it has seen your devices before, on the same port. When quiet hours begin it sends an encrypted “bye” to its devices, then sends and receives nothing.

4. The password and the invite code

The password never travels over the network; each device checks it locally. The QR invite contains the group’s ID, name and password, and only appears when you ask for it — treat it like the password itself.

What we never collect

  • No analytics, no usage statistics, no crash reports.
  • No advertising identifiers, no location, no contacts.
  • No accounts and no sign-in.
  • The app never connects to any server on the internet, and works with the internet switched off.
  • We don’t sell or share any data with anyone — there simply is no data on our side.

Your control over your data

  • Pause: the pause button disconnects CoShare from the network entirely until you resume.
  • Quiet hours: days and times when the device disappears from the network completely, such as working hours on a company laptop.
  • Retention: from one hour up to a week.
  • Clear now: “Clear history” in Settings, or delete any single item.
  • Leave a group: sending and receiving with it stops immediately.
  • Delete everything: uninstall the app, then remove its data folder if it remains:
